Murphy Sculpture Garden Redevelopment

UCLAx
Landscape Design 2
This project reimagines the Murphy Sculpture Garden as a more accessible, comfortable, and socially active landscape while preserving its identity as a contemplative art environment. Through site inventory, analysis, and program development, I identified opportunities to soften microclimate conditions, introduce shaded seating zones, clarify circulation paths, and create smaller social nodes that encourage lingering. Using hand drawing and physical model studies, I explored how planting, grade transitions, and spatial sequencing could better frame sculpture while offering flexibility for everyday campus life. The design balances quiet reflection with casual gathering, improving the garden’s usability without compromising its cultural and experiential character.

My work explores how people move through, gather in, and form emotional relationships with landscape spaces. I’m interested in the balance between contemplation and activity, circulation and pause, and how planting, shade, seating, and spatial sequencing shape experience at the human scale.
