Melnitz Stairs Redevelopment

UCLAx
Landscape Design 2
This project explored the redesign of the Melnitz Stairs as a small-scale public space focused on circulation, gathering, and everyday use. Beginning with site inventory and analysis, I identified issues related to accessibility, lack of shade, and limited social programming. Through iterative concept development, hand drawings, and physical models, I tested ways to soften the stairway’s hard edges, introduce planting for microclimate comfort, and integrate seating and landings that encourage pause and social interaction. The final proposal transforms the stairs from a transitional corridor into a usable, human-scale public space.

My work explores how people move through, gather in, and form emotional relationships with landscape spaces. I’m interested in the balance between contemplation and activity, circulation and pause, and how planting, shade, seating, and spatial sequencing shape experience at the human scale.
