Healing & Nourishing Plant Palette

UCLAx
Plant Studies: Shrubs
This project reimagines the landscape of the Holy Spirit Retreat Center as a Landscape of Service, inspired by the mission of the Sisters of Social Service. Organized through a series of interconnected hydrozones, the design supports care at multiple levels—care for self, community, and the environment. A central courtyard anchors the site, with walkable groundcover and flowering planting creating a flexible gathering space. Surrounding healing gardens offer quiet, sensory environments for reflection, while a productive, nourishing garden integrates fruit trees and raised beds into daily use. A riparian water feature serves as an ecological focal point, supporting habitat and creating a calming, reflective atmosphere. Together, the landscape creates a cohesive system that supports retreat, connection, and ecological resilience.

My work explores how people move through, gather in, and form emotional relationships with landscape spaces. I’m interested in the balance between contemplation and activity, circulation and pause, and how planting, shade, seating, and spatial sequencing shape experience at the human scale.
